We thank the overwhelming support given by our fellow Indians and caring people, institutions and governments across the world in supporting the calamity affected regions in Kerala state, India.
We are seeking support @ Rs 6,500 per family towards making their house livable and providing a basic kit for 3-4 days to get started. We are looking at helping 500 families in Thrissur district with priority given to senior-citizen-only-occupied homes with preference given to homes from poorer areas. Donations to be made on or before 24th August 2018 at the latest to be of use.
Problem History
- 70% of the state is completely flooded.
- Youngsters are held up in work at home and with neighbors. Families are unable to spare them.
- Volunteers are tired and are in need of rest. The resources are stretched.
- Situation in camps are not very good.
- Diseases are spreading and with lack of sanitary conditions post-flood is a problem.
- Many houses have only senior citizens as residents. Cleaning up the muck is an almost insurmountable problem, preventing them from returning to their homes.
- Out of state workers are in need of work and available.
- Rains are expected to hit again after a two day respite.

We commit to the following:
Relief to poor families as a first priority.
Transparent reporting on use of funds.
Utilize any balance funds towards flood relief efforts in neighboring districts.
This is a completely free service from Sen4ngos.org. 100% of the donations will go directly towards the flood affected families. The need is time based and urgent. More families returning to their homes will restore normalcy earlier. These families can support nearby residents and reduce the pressure and improve conditions in camps. People who have lost their homes completely will need to use these facilities till government relief work starts and flood waters recede.
Disaster relief happens in 3 stages.
a. Getting stranded people to camps.
b. Managing camps with better amenities
c. Relocating them back from camps.
Situation in many camps for proud malayalees is not good. A classroom of normal size takes in 20-40 individuals. Toilet facilities and water is overburdened. Clean undergarments are in short supply. For senior citizens, missing medication and care is highly disturbing. All basic necessities are lost. Some families have their homes completely washed away or unlivable without major repairs.
Need of the hour over the next 4 days is to help as many people who can possibly return home to actually return. We are focusing on a vulnerable but highly independent segment – the senior citizen.
